Marple Carnival Skate Park Event - 15 June 2013
Coaching, Competitions and Demonstrations
As part of Marple Carnival, and our project to extend and improve the skate park, Friends of Marple Memorial Park held an event in the park on Carnival Day, Saturday 15 June 2013, with skateboard and BMX demonstrations, coaching and mini-competitions for skate park users - which are all things that skate park users have requested in our consultations with them.
The Carnival event was put on for us by professional extreme sports company Team Extreme and featured demonstrations from a professional skateboarder and professional BMX rider throughout the day. Team Extreme also provided a Compare / MC and in between the demonstrations the pros coached local skate park users and held some mini-competitions for skateboarders, BMX Riders and one for scooter users too.
Despite having to get the mops and buckets out to dry the skate park early on the weather turned out kind and it remained sunny and dry throughout the rest of the day. Everyone seemed to have a good time and we hope that we raised awareness of our project to develop the skate park and increased the level of support for what we are trying to achieve.
Our mini Skateboard competition was won by Taz, the BMX competition by Alister and the Scooter competition by Conor. You can see them receiving their trophies and goodie-bag prizes from Compare Neil Danns, local Skater Lewis Abbott and Friends of Memorial Park organiser Mark Whittaker in the photos below. We'd like to thank Stationery Supplies, David Myers Golf Academy / Marple Golf Club and the Springfield Hotel for sponsoring the competitions with a donation of £50 each. We'd also like to thank our poster sponsors and everyone who donated raffle prizes too. Finally, a very special thank you to the Market Street branch of NatWest Bank - who joined in to support us on Carnival Day and raised £250 of match-funding through the bank! Full details of our sponsors and links to their web sites are featured further down the page.
Sponsorship, Fund-raising and Costs
In terms of sponsorship and fund-raising, the event raised a final total of £820. This includes £160 competition sponsorship, £188 poster sponsorship and £196 raised on the day from the "Guess the Sweets", the Raffle, Steve Abbott's silhouettes and miscellaneous donations, £26.50 from Woodstock Pizza's sales at the Marple Tavern, and a fantastic £250 match-funding from NatWest Bank. Our costs for the event have included £150 on the trophies and prizes and £60 on 12 promotional t-shirts, leaving us with a balance of £610 before paying the £1,700 Team Extreme fee. This means that, as expected, we had to pay some of those fees from our skate park funding already raised, which gave us a net loss of £1,090 from the event. If you can help us meet this deficit and boost our match-funding back up then please get in touch.
Media Studies students and tutors from Cheadle and Marple Sixth Form College, and some from Stockport College too, filmed the event and interviewed participants and spectators during the Carnival. We hope that they will be able to create some promotional video material from this for us that will help to boost publicity for the project and maybe also help when the time comes to make our grant application for skate park funds. We'll share these on the web site and via Social Media once available.
Marple Branch of the NatWest Bank supported us on the day and raised £250.
